Simy’s Year of Mandalas : August

Finally i can tell you a little secret ! I was asked by Simy Somer from Simy’s Studio to create her August Mandala : Lotus Blooms. Of course a theme that suits me very well as i love Lotus flowers and even created a pattern  last year called the Lotus & Blossom mandala.  But that is a total different thing. If you don’t no the concept of Simy’s Year of Mandalas i shall give you a short introduction to it.

Eindelijk mag ik weer een klein geheimpje verklappen ! Ik ben gevraagd door Simy Somer van Simy’s Studio om de mandala voor Augustus te verzorgen, genaamd : Lotus Blooms. Uiteraard een thema wat mij dicht bij het hart ligt aangezien ik van lotus bloemen houdt en er vorig jaar zelfs al een patroon naar heb gemaakt : de Lotus & Blossom mandala. Maar dat is een heel ander patroon en heeft voor nu niets met deze mandala te maken. Als je het concept van Simy’s Year of Mandalas nog niet kent, zal ik hier een korte introductie geven.

Simy’s Year of Mandalas is a a collection of drawn mandalas by Simy herself. Each month she reveals a new one and the challenge is to take up some yarn, and crochet a mandala according the one she has posted. Of course it doesn’t have to be a copy, like one on one. Use free imagination, stitches, different techniques and most of all creativity. Focus on that Mandala and get into a designing progress and a meditative state of creativity. But if you never have tried to do something like this, each month there is a designer who already used his/her imagination to create a example. And so this month the honour is mine.

Simy’s Year of Mandalas is een collectie van getekende mandalas door Simy zelf. Elke maand onthult zij een nieuw exemplaar en de uitdaging is dan ook om wat garen te pakken en een mandala te creeëren geinspireerd op haar getekende versie. Natuurlijk hoeft dit geen exacte kopie te zijn, geen één op één versie. Gebruik juist wat verbeelding, inlevingsvermogen, verschillende technieken, steken, kleuren en vooral creativiteit. Focus op een Mandala en ga op in het proces van ontwerpen en de meditatieve stand van creativiteit in je brein.  Uiteraard als je zoiets nog nooit hebt gedaan kan het moeilijk zijn en daarom is er iedere maand een ontwerp(st)er die alvast zijn/haar inspiratie heeft los gelaten op een versie. En zo ligt het stokje deze maand bij mij.

Although it is fun to just take some random yarns or different together, i took just one type of yarn. I chose the Scheepjes Metropolis. A beautiful yarn which is available in so many colors and what i most like for this pattern is a more “natural”look. The colors i chose shows off a real exotic combination and they cover most of the colors used in the mandala of Simy.

Ondanks dat het superleuk is om zomaar wat garen uit je kast te pakken of juist van alles door elkaar heen te gebruiken, nam ik slechts één merk garen : Scheepjes Metropolis. Een prachtig garen in heel, veel kleuren en wat ik het meeste aan dit garen waardeer is de meer “natuurlijke” look. De kleuren die ik koos vormen een exotische combinatie en vangen de meeste kleuren uit de mandala van Simy.

What I liked the most on this challenge is that i just could create a project without writing everything down for a pattern. The challenge is to let your own creativity come forward instead of taking a pattern and crochet it along. So thats why I chose on purpose to don’t make a pattern of this mandala. Besides that, the pattern would be so hard to describe as when i can freely crochet along I use the most difficult and complex combinations. It also made me realize i have to do this more often. Sometimes I hold my designs in a comfort zone as they have to be accesable for a weidth range of people. But with it I also hold myself down as making this Mandala made me realize it feel so much more like my creativity was flowing. And in the end that is the main reason of Simy’s Year of Mandalas. So i also learned from this challenge.

Wat ik het leukst vond aan deze uitdaging is dat ik een project kon maken zonder ieder detail en iedere steek op te moeten schrijven voor een patroon. De uitdaging is om je creativiteit aan te boren en dus koos ik er bewust voor geen patroon te maken van deze mandala. Het is de bedoeling dat je zelf iets creeert ipv wederom weer een patroon te pakken en het gewoon na te maken. Daarnaast was het ook gewoon weg niet mogelijk geweest een patroon te schrijven voor deze mandala, het stekengebruik, de techniek en complexe structuur zouden zoveel werk kosten om goed en duidelijk te beschrijven. Aan de andere kant liet dit me ook realiseren dat ik dit vaker moet gaan doen. Als ik ontwerp laat ik mijn ontwerpen soms bewust wat simpeler zodat ze toegankelijk blijven voor een breder publiek, maar daarmee rem ik ook mijn eigen creativiteit. Met het haken van deze mandala voelde het zo goed gewoon mijn creativiteit te laten stromen en helemaal los te kunnen gaan. En uiteindelijk is dat de uitdaging van Simy’s Year of Mandalas. Het was dus ook voor mij een goede les.

For the Mandala i have used so many different things. In close-ups you might see there is a lot of embroidery involved to point out lines, there are relief stitches in it, but also clusters and a lot of different regular stitches. It was so much fun to see how each stitch fell into another one and how something came alive. And although the Lotus Blooms mandala is just an inspiration, i took it pretty much as a example of how it had to look. In the end that is the best i do, crochet themed and visual ideas.

Voor de mandala gebruikte ik een combinatie van verschillende dingen. In close-ups kun je zien dat er veel borduurwerk in de mandala zit om lijnen van visueler te maken, maar ook het gebruik van relief steken, clusters en heel veel reguliere steken waren nodig om dit te maken. Het was echt een feestje om te zien hoe steken elkaar verbonden en een geheel gingen vormen. En ondanks dat de Lotus Blooms mandala slechts een inspiratie is naar iets nieuws, gebruikte ik het toch meer als een voorbeeld of hoe het moest worden. Uiteindelijk is dat ook waar ik goed in ben, het maken van projecten met een gedachte of visueel aspect.

Ik hoop dat je de mandala van deze maand mooi vindt. Ik heb er vele uren in gestoken om te maken wat het is. Als je het leuk vindt om te zien hoe de andere mandalas eruit zien van voorgaande maanden, breng dan een bezoekje aan Simy’s blog. Hier kun je ook de resultaten zien van ontwerpers die voor mij aan de beurt zijn geweest. Sommigen hebben er zelfs voor gekozen een patroon uit hun ontwerp te schrijven en dus kun je wellicht nog leuke dingen uit deze challenge halen. 

Als laatste wil ik Simy bedanken, allereerst omdat ze mij gevraagd heeft dit te doen. Maar zeker omdat zij uiteindelijk de mandalas en deze challenge heeft gemaakt, dus de meeste credits zijn voor haar wat mij betreft.
