Memory – another book from the Guy with the Hook

Memory is the third book from The Guy with the Hook. In this book, Mark returns to the world of traveling. He holds many treasured memories over his travel days to create this book, filled with new destinations, and travel stories, each guided by a fitting crochet pattern.

First, some general information about this third book:

  • 104 pages
  • hardcover
  • printed on recycled, sustainable quality paper
  • ISBN Dutch book – 978-90-903735-1-5
  • ISBN English book – 978-90-903735-3-9
  • available in Dutch and English – the English version holds US terms.
  • all patterns have written instructions and charts.

It is the follow-up to my first book, Journey/Crochet Journey. However, some small things have changed along the way. This will be the first book I completely produced on my own skills. So, not only the writing and designing part is done by me, but the photography and the digital editing as well. No publisher is involved in this third book besides my own. For that reason, sales and storage will also be slightly different this year.

In the meantime a short video of the book is also released, you can find it here:

Customers:

Customers who like to purchase the book have different options. You can get it in my own Etsy store from now on. You will find the link here:

Etsy store – order Memory

For sure, I have also worked on spreading out the book further than just my own shop. Luckily yarn brand Scheepjes has once again themed up on selling the book and so, every Scheepjes dealer around the world will – or at least can order the book for you. There is a good and fast connection between me and the warehouse and I am honored that they once again want to keep this third book in their collection as well.

Of course, crafting stores are also buying the book to sell it. Speaking of retailers for the book, please see the retailer’s information here if you are interested in storing the book.

Retailers information:

If you are interested in storing Memory in your shop this fall for some happy customers to get it, please know that the book will be available at de Bondt. B.V. This is the biggest warehouse and part of the brand Scheepjes. All smaller companies and amounts of books could be purchased there.

Overview of the patterns out of the book:

The pattern is inspired by the Dutch seaside which he often visits.

Hook size needed: 4.0mm (G).

Yarn needed: Scheepjes Stonewashed, which comes in balls of 50 grams with a length of 142 yards. The yarn exists out of 78% cotton and 22% acrylic. You will need the following amounts:

Color A: 1 ball of color number 813 Amazonite

Other materials needed: optional is an iron ring with a diameter of 20 inches to frame the mandala. However, this is no must but an optional choice.

Size of project: The mandala’s diameter will be approximately 20 inches after blocking or crocheting it into a ring.

Secrets of the Souk:

The pattern is inspired by the Souk of Marrakech.

Hook size needed: 4.0mm (G).

Yarn Requirements: I used a combination of two types of yarn for this pattern. The first is Scheepjes Wanderlust which comes in balls of 100 grams with a length of 253 yards. The yarn consists of 100 % acrylic and has many variations of a fast-changing gradient color palette. The second type of yarn I used is Scheepjes Colour Crafter. This is also a 100% acrylic type of yarn which comes in balls of 100 grams with a length of 328 yards.

Color A: As Color A, I used five colorways of Scheepjes Wanderlust. I used one ball of each colorway: 468 Rudesheim, 466 Paris, 459 Bangkok, 467 Amsterdam, and 455 Zanzibar. You will make several motifs from these balls. In total, you will need 656 yards for all motifs.

Color B: Scheepjes Colour Crafter 1002 Ede – you will need six balls from this color (1755 yards required)

Study of the Butterflies:

It is inspired by the migration of the monarch butterfly in Mexico.

Hook size needed: 1,75mm, 3.0mm (D), 4.0mm (F).

Yarn needed: I made three examples of the butterfly in different types of yarn and weights. You need a few grams of yarn for each color used – in every kind of yarn, so it is a great idea just to collect some scrap yarns and create a fun color set together. Ten grams of yarn for each color is always a safe amount of yarn to have.

Color combination one (orange):

The orange color combination is made with Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush, which comes in balls of 50 grams with a length of 306 yards. The yarn consists of 100% cotton. You will use a 1.75mm crochet hook for this type of yarn. Colors used:

Color B: colorway 392 Lime Juice
Color C: colorway 205 Kiwi
Color D: colorway 412 Forest Green

Color combination three (blue):

The blue color combination is made with Scheepjes Merino Soft, which comes in balls of 50 grams with a length of 115 yards. The yarn consists of 50% merino wool/ 25% acrylic/ 25% microfiber. You will use a 4.0mm crochet hook for this type of yarn. Colors used:

Color A: colorway 628 Botticelli
Color B: colorway 615 Soutine
Color C: colorway 617 Cezanne
Color D: colorway 643 Ansingh
Color E: colorway 643 Ansingh
Color F: colorway 601 Pollock

Other materials needed: a photo frame without a glass wall of size by choice is required. I took a rectangular shape from 12 inches x 8 inches, but any size will do as you can make as many or fewer butterflies as you like. Besides the photo frame, you will need some black pins to put into the butterfly as the antenna. Two for each butterfly are required. I used standard pins, which are mainly used for sewing.

Size: The size of the butterfly is measured from wing to wing in width and height.

The smallest version in Maxi Sugar Rush will have 3 inches in width and 2 inches in height.

The middle version in Catona will have 4 inches in width and 3 inches in height.

The biggest version in Merino Soft will have 5 inches in width and 4 inches in height.

Sandtracks Bag:

It is inspired by the wind patterns in the sands of the Sahara.

Yarn needed: Scheepjes Cahlista is used for this bag. Scheepjes Cahlista comes in balls of 50 grams with a length of 85 meters. The yarn consists of 100% double-gassed cotton. I used seven balls of colorway 248 Champagne to create this bag.

Other materials needed: I used some hook and loop tape on the inside of the top hem of the bag. This closes the bag pretty tight and is very friendly in use. You could also sew some buttons on it or use a zipper.

I also used a belt with clips that can be easily added to the sides of the bag. Finally, I used a belt from the Danish brand MUUD. Any belt will do – maybe you have one from an old bag, or you can make one from some waste yarn.

Size of project: The finished size of the bag without the belt will be 16 inches in height and 12 inches in width.

Aurora Shawl:

It is inspired on the Aurora Borealis which he saw in Lofoten – Norway.

Color C: Glacier Green [light green] / 126 meters required)
Color D: Artic Ocean [mid blue/white]/ 144 meters required)

Sunflowers of Ukraine:

This pattern is a reminder to the beautiful country of Ukraine and the war going on. Ukraine is famous for its many sunflower fields – Dutch people even have a double feeling due to the plane crash of MH17 which landed in sunflower fields. Besides, you can also spot a little heart in this mandala which stands for love, humanity, and courage.
