Spice Market CAL Part 6

Part 6

In Part 6 we’re gonna make some lanterns. At least…that’s what I tried to achieve. Of course you can also just name it a lovely few Rounds of crochet work with a lot of techniques and stitch work. No matter if you see lanterns or not…for me they are lanterns and I found it a really important part to add as most markets in the Middle-East have these kinds of colorful glass lanterns which create a mosaic rainbow in your room once their lighted. Be surprised by the next part as it is a refreshing couple of Rounds after the long and many mosaic crochet Rounds.

Special stitches used in this part :

Cross stitch (CS) – this stitch will be made over 2 sts. Skip first st and make a DC in next st. Then make another DC in first skipped st but make sure you crochet this one behind the already made DC so it falls behind it and not over it.

On photo 1 you sk the first st and make a dc in the second one. Make a next dc behind the first one in the skipped st. Important is to pull your hook behind the first dc as in photo 2. Once you’ve done this you create a X shaped stitch over 2 stitches.

Modified Cross stitch (MCS) –this stitch is also known as Judith stitch but it is a modified version. The stitch is made over 3 sts. Skip first st, 1DC in next 2 sts, then make 1DC in first skipped st. It will become an bit of a extended DC with an overlay over the other 2DC. Make sure while making the third DC you make it over the front of the other stitch and so you insert your hook from the front to the back and pull up the loop over the already made sts.

On photo 1 you see the first st skipped and in the next 2 is 1dc made. Then pull your hook over the front of the work as in photo 2 to make a dc in the first skipped st. On photo 3 you will see that it will be a bit extended by pulling up a loop over the already made sts. On photo 4 you see the finished result.

Special notes for this part :

– in this Part again we’re gonna put yarn colors aside to draw them up in a later Round. If your still want to know how this works, please check the tips and tricks section.

– in most Rounds you work behind a ch-sp. Make sure the ch-sp stays in front of the work all the time.

– when you work a sc through a ch-sp and a dc st behind it at the same time, you always work this from the front to the back. You actually just make a sc in the dc st but while doing it you catch the ch-sp in it and put it anchored in the stitch.

Round 1 (RS) : Take Color A and attach it in any ch2-sp. CH5 (first DC + CH2), 1DC in same sp. (1CS over next 2 sts) 72 times. * {1DC-CH2-1DC} in next ch2-sp, (1CS over next 2 sts) 72 times. Rep from * 2 more times. SS in third CH to connect. SS to next CH2-sp. [4 sides of 2DC/72CS and 4 times a CH2-sp]

Round 2 : CH1 (doesn’t count as st), * {1SC-CH2-1SC} in ch2-sp, sk first st on side, 1SC between dc and first cross stitch, (CH5, sk 2 cross stitches, 1SC in space after the 2  skipped cross stitches) 36 times.  ( last sc will fall between last cross stitch on side and next dc) sk last st. Rep from * 3 more times. SS in top of first st. Put Color A aside. [4 sides of 36 times a CH5-sp/38SC and 4 times a CH2-sp]

In next Rounds make sure you keep the ch-sps in front of the work while working behind them.

Round 3 : Take Color H and attach it in any ch2-sp. CH3 (first DC), {1DC-CH2-2DC} in same sp, CH1, sk first 2 sts, (3DC in space between 2 cross stitches behind a ch5-sp ) 36 times, CH1, sk last 2 sts on side. * {2DC-CH2-2DC} in next ch2-sp, CH1, sk first 2 sts, (3DC in space between 2 cross stitches behind a ch5-sp) 36 times. CH1, sk last 2 sts on side. Rep from * 2 more times. SS in top of first st. Fasten off yarn. [4 sides of 36 times a 3DC-gr /4DC / 2 times a CH1-sp and 4 times a CH2-sp]

On Photo 4 and 4 -1 you can see how to work the sc through both the ch-sp and the dc behind it at the same time. This maybe useful for next Round.

CH3, 1SC in next 2 sts. Rep from * 3 more times. SS in top of first st. Put Color A aside. [4 sides of 41SC/ 2 times a CH3-sp/ 35 times a CH5-sp and 4 times a CH2-sp]

CH5 (first DC + CH2), 1DC in same sp, 1DC in next 3 sts, 3DC in next ch3-sp, (3DC in space between two 3dc-gr of Round 3) 35 times. 3DC in next ch3-sp, 1DC in next 3 sts. * {1DC-CH2-1DC} in ch2-sp, 1DC in next 3 sts, 3DC in next ch3-sp, (3DC in space between two 3dc-gr of Round 3) 35 times. 3DC in next ch3-sp, 1DC in next 3 sts. Rep from * 2 more times. SS in top of first st. Fasten off yarn. [4 sides of 37 times a 3dc-gr/8DC and 4 times a CH2-sp]

Round 6 : Draw up Color A in nearest ch2-sp. CH1 (doesn’t count as st), * {1SC-CH2-1SC} in ch2-sp, 1SC in next 7 sts, CH1, (1SC through next ch5-sp of Round 4 and the middle dc of a 3dc gr behind it from Round 5, CH3)34 times, 1SC through next ch5-sp of Round 4 and the middle dc of a 3dc gr behind it from Round 5, CH1, sk next st ( which will be the third dc of the last 3dc-gr on side) ,1SC in next 7 sts. Rep from * 3 more times. SS in top of first st. Put Color A aside. [4 sides of 51SC/ 34 times a CH3-sp/ 2 times a CH1-sp and 4 times a CH2-sp]

In the next Round all DC’S will be made in the skipped stitches on Round 7, over the ch’s. These are the stitches you skipped on previous Round. It will mean the ch’s will be captured in the dc’s made. The sc’s and fpdc’s are just being skipped this entire Round. On Photo 9 you will have a closer look how to crochet stitches over the ch’s.
