Ikebana crochet pattern is out now…

Another beauty can see daylight! I am happy to announce a new mandala pattern called: Ikebana. Before I tell you the inspiration for this pattern – which is already explained in the name, let me first tell you how thankful I am for all the love I have received lately from all of you who follow my work and patterns. It is amazing to see how joyful and enthusiastic you guys are. I still do not take it for granted; each time I release something, it feels like a riddle unfolding.

I will first tell some more about the idea behind the project. Ikebana is the Japanese art of creating flower arrangements. It is an ancient tradition that is creative and meditative. When performing the art of ikebana, creating a piece with perfect lines is essential by using all parts of a plant or flower. This quality makes a composition reflect the outside nature in your living room. This made me think about how I could take this beautiful form of art and turn it into a crochet pattern. And there was Ikebana!

For sure you need to know some general information about the pattern:

  • The pattern is made with Scheepjes Organicon. A 100% cotton type of yarn that comes in balls of 50 grams with a length of 170 meters. I used three balls of it in colorway 212 Sweet Apple. It doesn’t matter which type of yarn you take; you will need approx. 490-510 meters of yarn.

For the pink/purple version, I used one Scheepjes Whirl Fine art. This yarn comes in balls of 220 grams with a length of 460 meters. The yarn consists of 50% merino wool/25% micro, and 25% acrylic. As the meters aren’t enough for the whole pattern, you can add one ball of Scheepjes merino soft in a matching end color to crochet the entire pattern. The example I made doesn’t have that. I used colorway 659 Modernism.

  • the smaller size needs a 3.0mm crochet hook, and the pink/purple version is made with a 4.0mm crochet hook.
  • The diameter of the Organicon version will become 55 cm. the size of the whirl fine art version is the same when you will use one whirl without an extension.

A ring is optional; if you like to use one, take the above diameter for a ring. However, it is better to crochet the project first and then decide on the size of a ring.

  • the pattern comes in a PDF file which you can download after purchase. The pattern is available in English (US) and Dutch.
  • the pattern has written instructions guided by photos. There are no videos or charts available for this pattern due to the complexity of the pattern.
  • knowledge of front and back post stitches is required for this pattern.

And how to get the pattern? As usual, it is available in my Etsy shop and Ravelry. After purchase, you will receive a PDF file to download. You’ll get access to all available languages.

And as many of you appreciate a printed version of a pattern, I also have some booklets available for this pattern. You’ll find them in my Etsy shop.

And to conclude this post, some lovely photos of the new pattern!
