Last week I received this amazing new book in the mail and I was so thrilled to review it…but I wanted to make something out of it as well to have a clear opinion and to show off what you can do with this book. So to start off, the designer of these amazing dolls is called Alexa Boonstra, also known under here artistic name : Amilishly. For a while now she creates the most fun dolls in different outcomes and how wonderful it is to see a dream came true for her as she now has her very first book ! A book full of 11 beautiful doll designs in different clothing styles and all based on traditional Japanese styles and culture. Knowing this was already a +1 for me as I myself are a true fan of Japan and all related.
Afgelopen week ontving ik dit geweldige boek in de brievenbus en ik was zo enthousiast om hier wat over te schrijven….maar ik vond dat ik eerst iets moest maken uit het boek om een goede mening te kunnen vormen en om te kunnen laten zien wat je met dit boek kan doen. Om te beginnen, de ontwerpster van deze geweldige popjes is genaamd Alexa Boonstra, of beter bekend als Amilishly onder haar artiestennaam. Ze maakt al een behoorlijk tijdje de meest prachtige poppenpatroontjes met iedere keer weer een verrassende uitkomst. Het is dan ook mooi om te zien dat nu een droom voor haar werkelijkheid is geworden, het publiceren van een eerste boek. In dit boek vindt je 11 patronen voor verschillende popjes in verschillende kledingstijlen welke zijn geïnspireerd op de Japanse klederdracht, stijlen en cultuur. Toen ik dit wist was ik al lichtelijk bevooroordeeld over het boek aangezien ik zelf een groot fan ben van Japan en alles wat daarmee te maken heeft.
To start my journey off with this book I thought it was a good idea to get in the mood even before the book would arrive. So I started with Amilishly’s male design named Killian. This is a individual pattern from her hand which you won’t find in the book. The book only contains female dolls. One benefit is that the Killian pattern is available in Dutch and English, so for all foreigners this would be a nice get-to-know-a-pattern from Amilishly. The book itself is for now available in Dutch only, but in a few weeks the English version will be there as well.
Om mijn reis te starten met dit boek dacht ik dat het leuk zou zijn om alvast in de stemming te komen nog voor het boek zou arriveren. Daarom besloot ik te starten met het mannelijke patroontje van Amilishly genaamd Killian. Dit is een individueel patroon van haar hand en is dus niet terug te vinden in het boek. Het boek bevat enkel vrouwelijke patronen. Een voordeel aan het Killian patroon is daarin tegen wel dat het ook in het Engels beschikbaar is waardoor niet Nederlandse mensen op deze manier ook een leuke instap kunnen krijgen in de patronen. Het boek zelf is voor nu enkel beschikbaar in het Nederlands, echter zal de Engelse versie snel verschijnen.
And so the journey started with making Killian. As you can see above you first crochet a body. It doesn’t matter if you crochet a boy or girl, you always start with a body and fun fact : you indeed crochet underwear for them within the pattern ! Isn’t that fun ?! The body is filled up and you can decide yourself to add some elements like iron thread, which eyes and which colors or yarns you take. It is all pretty flexible in these things so you could easily create something with a own signature. This is what I did as well. I tried to not copy the patterns of Amilishly but also give a own touch to the whole doll. A good sample of that is the hair I created for Natsumi. It isn’t the regalur wig you create according to the book but I went a little freestyle on this. As the book tells you very detailed about things like hair, iron wire and many more of this details you can easily do this.
En zo begon ik aan mijn reis om Killian te maken. Zoals je hierboven kunt zien haak je altijd eerst het lijfje voor zowel jongetje als meisje…en wat ik daar het leukste aan vind is dat er zelfs is nagedacht over ondergoed ! Is dat niet leuk ?! Het lichaam wordt opgevuld en je kunt zelf keuzes maken in enkele elementen van het popje zoals ogen, toevoegen van ijzerdraad en welke kleuren en garens je gebruikt. Het maakt het hele concept erg makkelijk en leuk om je eigen signatuur er aan toe te kunnen voegen. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan is het haar wat ik maakte op Natsumi. Het is niet het pruikje wat je in het boek haakt maar ik ging voor een “freestyle” kapsel. Omdat het boek je goed gedetailleerd uitleg verschaft over technieken zoals haar, ijzerdraad en vele andere zaken is het dan ook makkelijk deze details toe te voegen.
Now some more about the book itself. As said there are 11 dolls in the book all based on different Japanese clothing styles. You have to think about a traditional Geisha pattern like the one above called Natsumi, but there is also a school uniform girl named Fumiko, or a Gothic Lolita style based doll. As Japan is very rich in clothing styles and color use, the patterns are very diverse and colorful to see. Of course I can’t show the entire book, but here are some pics which show you some pages. Good to know is that all drawings in the book are also from Alexa’s hand, she is not only a very gifted designer, but also an amazing artist with pencils and ink. Most of the doll designs in the book she sketched out and sketches can also been seen in the book. Interesting to see and it gives a good inside that Alexa creates these designs from absolutely nothing to what they are in the book.
Nu wat meer over het boek zelf. Zoals gezegd staan er 11 popjes in het boek welke allemaal zijn gemaakt op een verschillende, Japanse kledingstijl. Hierbij moet je denken aan de originele Geisha genaamd Natsumi ( je ziet haar hierboven), maar er is bijvoorbeeld ook een meisje in schooluniform genaamd Fumiko, of een Gothic Lolita stijl popje. Het is allemaal heel divers en kleurrijk in zijn totaal. Ik kan uiteraard niet teveel uit het boek prijs geven maar hieronder kun je wat fragmenten zien uit het boek. Leuk om te weten is dat de tekeningen in het boek ook van Alexa’s hand komen, ze is niet enkel een geweldige ontwerpster, daarnaast is ze ook heel goed met pen en inkt. De meeste van haar ontwerpen schetst ze zelf uit en deze schetsen staan ook in het boek. Hierdoor is het heel interessant om te zien hoe haar ontwerpen van niets naar iets gaan en tot leven komen.
Well I could write down so much more, but in the end I can only say : if you like dolls, amigurumi, and something different…dive into the world of Amilishly. She also has many more regular designs as indepent purchases on Ravelry if you like to discover something from her hand without purchasing the book at once, but I have to be honest…the book is a pretty good doll bible for techniques used and the patterns made in it are special ones which you won’t see that often in this category of crochet. I think it is worth every penny and I will definitely use mine more then once to crochet some other girls. My book is signed personally by Alexa and her words touched me the minute I saw them. “Stay who you are” was a sentence that is the foundation chain of life and please my dear Alexa…for you I wish the same. Stay who you are and keep suprising us with your special designs and brighten up the world with it !

Ik kan nog zoveel meer schrijven over dit boek, maar uiteindelijk kan ik enkel zeggen : als je van popjes, amugurumi, haken en eens een keer iets anders houdt….duik dan eens in de wereld van Amilishly. Ze heeft ook vele, wat minder specifieke Japanse patronen als losse patronen te koop op Ravelry, welke allicht een mooie kennismaking kunnen vormen met Amilishly. Echter vind ik wel dat haar boek een poppen bijbel is als het aankomt op uitleg van technieken en ik zou het dan ook als een echt verlengstuk zien op haar individuele patronen. Ik zou het iedere cent waard vinden omdat het eens een boek is met een keer iets anders dan we al zoveel zien in deze branche van het haken. Ik weet dan ook zeker dat ik mijn boek vaker dan eens ga gebruiken en binnenkort wellicht nog wat meer meisjes haak. Mijn boek is persoonlijk gesigneerd door Alexa en een zin uit haar woorden raakte me diep. : “Blijf wie je bent”. Ik denk dat dit alles zegt over het basis fundament van ons zijn en daarom wens ik dit jouw met net zoveel liefde toe Alexa. Blijf ons verrassen met mooie ontwerpen en geef de wereld wat meer kleur door dit te doen.
