Veluwsch Vosje are the Dutch words for Fox living at the Veluwe. A nature reserve in the middle of the Netherlands. Since a fox is the logo of my hand-dyed yarn store, Veluwsch Verfgoed, I wanted a mascot for my brand to take to events or show off as an example of the Lettlopi yarns I sell. From this idea came the Veluwsch Vosje, which turned into this cute and adorable fox. A doll pattern where all parts – except ears are crocheted directly along the body, so you don’t have to worry about good placement. The arms and legs can be made lightly flexible – although this is not a must and is optional.
Yarn Requirements:
I used Istex Lettlopi for this pattern. This yarn comes in 100-gram balls and has a length of 100 meters. The yarn is made from 100% Icelandic wool. It is a bit hairy and rustic, which is perfect for patterns like these, as it gives the fox a nice look and covers up increases/decreases. It therefore makes it very user-friendly.
COLOR A: 0059 – black – 1 ball of 100 grams needed (70 meters used)
COLOR B: 1704 – orange – 3 balls of 100 grams needed (220 meters used)
COLOR C: 0051 – white – 1 ball of 100 grams needed (80 meters used)
COLOR D: 1402 – light blue – 1 ball of 100 grams needed (50 meters used)
Needles used:
I used a 3.5mm hook for the entire pattern of the fox. For the scarf I used 4.0mm dpn sock needles. If you crochet a scarf, please use a 4.0mm crochet hook.
Size: The fox will be approximately 30cm (12 inches) tall. The width of the fox will be approx. 12,5cm (5 inches).
Sizing depends on the yarn used. When using a thinner thread, your end result will turn out smaller. Don’t worry about tension, as long as your work looks steady and filling can’t be noticed through the stitches, it is okay. The work always needs to be a bit tighter than regular crochet work.
Other materials needed: To make this pattern, you will need some additional items. Some are practical, others will make things easier crocheting the fox.
- 2 plastic eyes in color black – 9mm.
- About 100 grams of fiberfill
- Stitch markers if you want to mark the start of a Round
- Sewing needle
- Row counter (if you find it hard to keep track on the count of Rounds/Rows)
- Glasses suitable for dolls. I used some glasses which measured 10cm/4 inches in width.
- 4 pipe cleaners/chenille stems with a diameter of 20mm and a length of 50cm/20 inches.
- The arms, legs, and tail are filled with fiberfill and a folded pipe cleaner to make the parts slightly stretchable. If you find this too hard, just skip this. The fox will only be less flexible, although the hands are already formed during crocheting.
- When body parts are attached to the main body, you directly crochet them along at certain stitches, so there is no need for placement and you won’t end up with body parts at different heights or in different places. Only the ears are attached separately by sewing them onto the head, as the construction doesn’t allow them to be attached right away.
The pattern includes 30+ pages of instructions, written and supported by many, many photos. After purchase, you can download the pattern as a PDF file in all available languages.
