Oceanborn was a unique shawl pattern that I created with a challenge to myself in mind. I wanted to make a quality pattern for a set of hand-dyed sock yarns. Many of the designs for these yarns are intended only for knitting, and I wanted to make that change here. And so, I did! I took the ocean as an inspiration. The white foam on the rolling waves could be found in this shawl. Andā¦as I loved the outcome of this design so much, why not extend the pattern to a cushion? This wasnāt as easy as it seemed at first, but I succeeded. It is like an overview of the oceanās surface.
I created this pillow by dyeing a special kit for it. I originally made this pattern with a commercial yarn, but they discontinued it, so I had to come up with a new idea. As I have Veluwsch Verfgoed, I thought… why not dye an own kit for this pattern. In the end, you can use any type of yarn for this pattern – but this would make it very special. So, I came up with my own kit.
Some general information about the pattern:
Yarn Requirements: The cushion is made with a set of hand-dyed yarns from Veluwsch Verfgoed. The set includes four colors of merino sock yarn, 75% merino superwash, and 25% nylon. You will need 100 grams of color A and 50 grams of the other three colors. These quantities are enough for two sides of the cushion cover and the finishing. For a single square, use half the quantities.
I dyed this colorway specifically for this pattern (the kit is available in the Veluwsch Verfgoed shop), but you can, of course, use any fingering-weight yarn you like. For colors B-D, I used three colors that complement each other, progressing from light to dark.
Color A: Veluwsch Snowfield (100 grams/400 meters needed)
Color B: Oceanborn 1 (50 grams/200 meters needed)
Color C: Oceanborn 2 (50 grams/200 meters needed)
Color D: Oceanborn 3 (50 grams/200 meters needed)
Crochet hook needed:
You will use a 3,0mm hook for the cushion cover in this pattern.
If you like to crochet just one square for a blanket, use a 3.5mm for more stretch.
Size: one finished square for a side will measure approx. 37 cm/15 inches in width and height. The finished sizes will change to 40cm/16 inches when adding the cushion.
Other materials needed: One cushion of 40cm x 40cm/ 16 x 16 inches to fill the cushion cover.
-For this pattern, there are written instructions guided by charts. I didnāt add photos because the charts provide far more insight into the buildup of this dynamic pattern, which is constructed from closely spaced stitches. Also, the used yarn has hairy fibers, which make the photos less clear.
