Yes! The third edition of the Guy with the Hook’s magazine is here! This journey of a new concept started in February 2024 with the magazine’s first edition. I took one of my most beloved themes and the new pattern called Bohemian Rhapsody. An ode to the beautiful rock band Queen and a proper song explanation turned into crochet stitches. You can have an idea for something new, but you never know what the opinion and review of the audience will be. But man, you guys were so positive, and I didn’t expect it would be such a great success! And there was number two; Secret Garden, you guys even made that one bigger! So, time for number three; the Theory of the five Elements.

Now, if you are curious about what the magazine might look like, you can watch the overview video on YouTube for a quick and fun look.
So, the third edition of the magazine isn’t any different than the first and second one. It has the same quality paper, good fonts, and clear instructions – all guided by beautiful photos and designs. If you did miss the first and second edition of the magazine, it is this one:

But, as I said, there is not only a magazine, but the pattern is also definitely new. And it is a fun one.

And then some general information about the pattern:
The theory of the five elements is the pattern highlighted in the third edition of TGWTH magazine. It combines four individual patterns that can be crocheted individually or combined to make a wonderful bedspread.
Anyone knows the four elements: water, earth, fire, and air. But did you know the theory of the five elements? In this pattern you will find out some more about this theory. You will learn the five elements by making a different crochet pattern. This theory was born in ancient China and widely spread and adopted daily in China and other Eastern countries. Where the four elements are more primal, the five elements are more about connection, actions, and reactions. Meet Fire, Wood, Earth, Water, and Metal, and crochet along!
Although there is much to tell about the theory of the five elements, the magazine only provides the background story and meanings. The digital patterns contain only this magazine’s crochet patterns and instructions.
Some general information about the pattern:
Yarn Requirements: Each of the four square pattern is made with one Scheepjes Whirl Fine Art. A Whirl Fine Art comes in cakes of 215-225 grams of yarn with a length of 460 meters. The yarn is 50% merino wool, 25% acrylic, and 25% micro. I used one cake of colorway 658 Classicism, 652 Pop Art, 653 Fauvism, and 655 Dadaism.
If you like to combine those four squares with a border, you will also need an extra 65 grams (140 meters) of yarn for each square, bringing the total to 260 grams (540 meters). I used Scheepjes Merino Soft in colorway 604 Lowry for this, as this yarn has the same conditions as the Whirl Fine Art.
Crochet hooks: You will need a 4.0mm and 4.5mm hook.
Size: One finished square pattern will be 23×23 inches/ 55×55 cm. The squares combined will deliver a blanket measuring 58×58 inches/ 145×145 cm.
The pattern contains clear, written instructions guided by charts. In some parts, you will also find a photo to guide you. The pattern contains many different stitches and a lot of text. You will have to be an experienced crocheter to work this pattern.
Although the pattern is officially made for the magazine, it is also available as a digital purchase. When you purchase the digital version of the pattern, you can download the PDF file in all available languages, including Dutch and English (US). You can find the digital pattern here:
