Bohemian Rhapsody and the first edition of a new magazine is out now…

This is another exciting new milestone for me to announce! Last year, I stated that the end of an era was thereby making three crochet books over four years. The three books are a lovely trilogy and are good for now. Maybe I will return to book-making in the future, but for now, it feels like a good choice. That didn’t mean I was done publishing my patterns, so I did some thinking about what other ways it would be possible to continue on.

And there, the idea was born for The Guy with the Hook’s Magazine. A glossy magazine that holds one very large pattern. But it had to be more than just a printed paper with a crochet pattern in it. So, I started working on something that offered more than that, like articles, stories, inspiration, photos, and fun facts. At the same time I also was working on a new, large crochet project inspired by the greatest song of all times made by the rock band Queen; Bohemian Rhapsody. And so these two things did come together in a fun and actually very convenient way. Resulting in the first magazine by the Guy with the Hook.

Now, if you are curious about what the magazine might look like, you can see the overview video on YouTube to have a quick and fun lookthrough.

So, the first edition of this new magazine concept is a fact and hopefully, you all love it so much that I can continue on, making the next bunch of editions – as some patterns are actually ready for them already 🙂 I also listened to the critics and opinions on earlier published items from my side. Therefore, the magazine is printed in a larger size, which has clear and bigger text without too much color. The cover of the magazine is printed with glossy paper, the inside however is printed on good quality paper which makes it a very reasonable and sustainable piece to use and collect.

But….as told, there is not only the start of a magazine, the pattern in it is definitely new as well. And it is a big one – like Spice Market big. Lots of details, different stitches, and colors are used to create the Bohemian Rhapsody blanket. And most important, it tells you the real meaning behind the Bohemian Rhapsody song. At each Part of this blanket you will crochet something related to the lyrics, but you will also learn the true meaning of the words if you didn’t know them so far. Therefore, the blanket might nog give away a direct connection to this theme and song, but crocheting it and reading the ideas and meanings part by part will make you definitely understand the whole concept. I also created an introduction video to the pattern which you can find here:

And then some general information about the pattern:

Yarn Requirements: For this pattern, I used Scheepjes Catona, which is a
mercerized type of 100% cotton that comes in balls of 10, 25, or 50
grams. A ball of 50 grams has a length of 125 meters. I did this as you
will need many colors in smaller amounts for this design. I used the
following colorways and amounts:

Color A: colorway 110 Jet Black (350 grams needed – 875 meters needed)
Color B: colorway 105 Bridal White (135 grams needed – 338 meters needed)
Color C: colorway 522 Primrose (20 grams needed – 50 meters needed)
Color D: colorway 208 Yellow Gold (45 grams needed – 113 meters needed)

Color V: colorway 412 Forest Green (10 grams needed – 25 meters needed)

There is also an alternative color version created out of Scheepjes
Whirl and Whirlette’s. For this version, colors A and B are matching
Whirlette color and Color C-V are all replaced by the chosen Whirl. The
shown example is created out of the following colorways:

Color A: 2 whirlette’s 868 Bilberry needed
Color B: 1 whirlette 860 Ice needed
Color C-V: 1 Scheepjes Whirl 760 Cotton Candyman

The Whirl and Whirlette version of the pattern

Crochet hook needed: I recommend a 3.0mm hook for this pattern – in
both versions.

Each Part of this pattern holds basic crochet stitches and has written instructions and a chart to guide you.

Although the pattern is officially made for the magazine, it is also available as a digital purchase. When you purchase the digital version of the pattern, you can download the PDF file in all available languages, including Dutch and English (US). The digital version of the pattern holds all explanation and background stories, so for the meaning and context of this blanket there is no difference in the magazine edition or the digital pattern. You can find the digital pattern here:

If you love the magazine and want to get a copy, you can find it in my Etsy shop. The difference with the digital version of the pattern is you’ll receive a high-quality printed magazine with the same pattern and instructions; there is much more to entertain you, like fun articles, some background stories, old photos, and personal words. The magazine is also available in English (US) and Dutch. Please note that shipping the magazine will be done at the cheapest rates, which doesn’t include tracking options. In 99% of all shipments over the last years, this works the best, and it saves a lot of costs.

I really do hope you love this whole new concept and pattern I have created. I have been a huge fan of Queen and Freddie Mercury from a young age, and so this theme was one I had in mind for a long time. However, I didn’t want to do a one-on-one like the Freddie Mercury crochet portrait, but I wanted to use a deeper connection and all my creativity to explore and create. There is so much to tell about the song Bohemian Rhapsody – and often I think many of us don’t realize what the lyrics truly mean. So, I did a lot of research and, of course, had a personal view of it as well. These two together have created this gigantic pattern that keeps you satisfied for many, many hours.
